Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mehmet Sait Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Yenisehir in 1868/69, at about 14, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Mehmet Sait as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener). Mehmet Sait then moved to Almyros (Ermiye) from 1870 to 1873, then back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1874 to 1877. Next came Shumen (Şumnu) from 1877 to 1884, then Aksaray and Acre (Akka) from 1884 to 1889. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Sait to Tripoli (Trablusşam) from 1889 to 1897. The last posts were in Latakia (Lazkiye) from 1897 to 1903.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 850 in 1889/90, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Tripoli, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less.
