Life#
This official was born in Constanța (Köstence) in 1852/53 (AH 1269), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
The official began work in Targovishte (Eski Cuma) in 1868/69, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Shumen (Şumnu), where the entries run to 1878. The official then moved to ten places in 21 years, from Camburnu to Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç), with a rise to official (Memur) in 1893/94 and to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1897/98. The last posts were in Göynük from 1899 to 1904. In all, 12 places on two continents, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 600 in 1878/79, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Camburnu, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 31 years of salary come to 184,140 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
