Life#
Mustafa Hayri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1868/69, Mustafa Hayri began work in Sinop, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Mustafa Hayri in Sinop as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mustafa Hayri back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1870 to 1884, then Izmir in 1884/85 and Istanbul in 1885/86. Next came Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1886 to 1891, then five places in 13 years, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1894/95 and to assistant director (Müdür Muavini) in 1903/04. The last posts were in Mada'in Salih (Medain-i Salih) from 1904 to 1907. Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Entries spanning 40 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 1,000 in 1904/05, the peak, as Müdür Muavini in Mada'in Salih, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
