Life#
Born in Kastamonu in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Ali Riza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Riza began work in Toba in 1868/69, at about 16, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Ali Riza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kastamonu, the birthplace. Next came six places in 14 years, from İnebolu to Akçakoca (Akçaşehir). The lists have no entry for 1880 to 1885. The last post was in Araç again in 1893/94.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78, as Muhabere Memuru in Kastamonu, when 16 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş. In all, 12 years of salary come to 48,840 kuruş, 66 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
