Life#
Ali Tevfik Efendi was born in Gümüşhane in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Meclis-i idaresi azasi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Tevfik began work in Gümüşhane in 1871/72, at about 18, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Ali Tevfik in Gümüşhane, the birthplace, as Hizmetli. The annual lists then follow Ali Tevfik to Erzurum from 1878 to 1884, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Erzincan in 1884/85. Next came a return to Gümüşhane from 1885 to 1898, then Bayburt from 1898 to 1903. For 1891 to 1893 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Esnihan from 1903 to 1907.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 500 in 1883/84, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzurum, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 138,660 kuruş, 79 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
