Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Gümüşhane in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a deputy judge (naib). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Osman Nuri began work in Diyadin in 1881/82, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 170 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Osman Nuri in Sinop as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Osman Nuri then moved to Muş from 1884 to 1887, then Trabzon from 1887 to 1894. Next came Of from 1894 to 1899, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür), then a return to Trabzon from 1899 to 1903. The last post was in Kavak in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 170 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Of, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 115,080 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
