Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in İskilip in 1862/63 (AH 1279), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1879/80, Osman Nuri began work in Iskilib, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Osman Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kastamonu. Osman Nuri then moved to six places in 16 years, from Tosya to Beynel haremeyn, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1893/94 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1900/01. The last post was in Akhisar in 1903/04. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 1,000 in 1900/01, as 2. Müdür in Beynel haremeyn, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
