Life#
Mehmed Niyazi Efendi was born in Niš (Niş) in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmed Niyazi began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1881/82, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Mehmed Niyazi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Gelibolu. Next came Hudavendigar from 1885 to 1888, then Kırklareli from 1888 to 1894. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Niyazi to Karacik from 1894 to 1896. From 1896 to 1907 every annual entry places Mehmed Niyazi in Aydın. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
