Life#
Mehmet Emin Efendi was born in Aydın in 1870/71 (AH 1287), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Emin also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish and spoke French.
Work began in Chania (Hanya) in 1891/92, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmet Emin as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in Selino, where the entries run to 1897/98. Next came a return to Aydın, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1907. The last posts were in Samos (Sisam) and Beirut (Beyrut) from 1907 to 1910 and Kosova in 1910/11, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1907/08 and to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1909/10.
Pay rose from 600 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 1,500 in 1909/10, as Müfettiş in Beirut, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
