Life#
Born in Manisa in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Emin Efendi was the child of an imam. Mehmet Emin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1894/95, Mehmet Emin began work in Ödemiş, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mehmet Emin in Ödemiş as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru). Mehmet Emin then moved to Tire and Kuşadası from 1895 to 1900. The last posts were in Aydın from 1900 to 1907.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 445 in 1906/07, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aydın, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Manisa doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by NİZAM BERKAN MERCAN (2025) probably refers to Mehmet Emin, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
