Life#
Hasan Salih Efendi was born in Manisa in 1874/75 (AH 1291), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Mubasir". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Salih began work in Manisa in 1887/88, at about 14, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Hasan Salih in Komotini (Gümülcine) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hasan Salih then moved to Beirut (Beyrut), Bekaa, Baalbek and Antakya, four places in nine years, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1900/01. The last post was in Zor in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 900 in 1906/07, as 2. Müdür in Zor, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Hasan Salih probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Manisa doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by NİZAM BERKAN MERCAN (2025) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
