Life

Born in Manisa in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hafız Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Hüseyin Hüsnü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 14, in 1891/92, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Manisa, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1895/96 to 1897/98 places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Izmir (İzmir), first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1897/98 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Posta Memuru in Izmir, when 13 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 8,400 kuruş, 46 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1897/98. Hüseyin Hüsnü probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Manisa doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by NİZAM BERKAN MERCAN (2025) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
