Life#
Ahmet Muhsin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1895/96, Ahmet Muhsin began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1895/96 and 1896/97, place Ahmet Muhsin in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
