Life#
Musa Kazım Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Musa Kazım also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1892/93, Musa Kazım began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From 1895/96 to 1908/09 every annual entry places Musa Kazım in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1897/98 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 400 in 1908/09, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 27,660 kuruş, 38 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
