Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Andros Hürmüzi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Andros Hürmüzi also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1896/97, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1900/01, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Andros Hürmüzi in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Büyükdere.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 240 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Büyükdere, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 11,160 kuruş, 38 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
