Life#
Mehmet Emin Efendi was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mehmet Emin also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Mehmet Emin began work in Izmir (İzmir) in 1894/95, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmet Emin as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Izmir, where the entries run to 1899/1900, with a rise to Mersule Basmemuru in 1896/97. The last posts were in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) from 1901 to 1904 and Jaffa (Yafa) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 600 in 1904/05, as Seyyar Memur in Jaffa, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
