Life#
Ahmet Hurşit Efendi was born in Elazığ in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). At about 12, in 1887/88, Ahmet Hurşit began work in Hekimhan, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 475 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 4 per cent worked unpaid for eight years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1895/96, to 1901/02, every annual entry places Ahmet Hurşit in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Hekimhan.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 475 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Hekimhan, when 45 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 450 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1901/02; the list of 1902/03 (AH 1320) gives the status word Vefat (death).
