Life#
Born in Elazığ in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Osman Haşim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a land registry official (tapu memuru). Osman Haşim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Arapgir in 1891/92, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Osman Haşim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). Next came Larissa in 1897/98, then a return to Elazığ, the birthplace, from 1899 to 1903. The last post was in Hama in 1903/04.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 540 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Hama, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
