Life#
Mehmed Tevfik Efendi was born in Keban in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1882/83, Mehmed Tevfik began work, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 4 per cent worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Mehmed Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Adana. Mehmed Tevfik then moved to Malatya, Buldan, Elazığ and Trabzon, four places in 14 years. The last post was in Hayrabolu in 1906/07.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 500 in 1900/01, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Elazığ, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
