Life#
Born in Mora in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Kadri Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Work began in Bursa in 1885/86, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Hasan Kadri as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) in Bursa, where the entries run to 1892/93. Next came Thessaloniki in 1893/94, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), then a return to Bursa from 1894 to 1899. Hasan Kadri then moved to Mustafakemalpaşa (Kirmasti) and Bursa from 1899 to 1902. The last posts were in Mudurnu from 1902 to 1905.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 750 in 1893/94, as Seyyar Memur in Thessaloniki, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 450 kuruş. After the last annual entry, for 1904/05, the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
