Life#
Born in Chania (Hanya) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Arif Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani); Arif also wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Chania in 1890/91, at about 23, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Arif in Chania, the birthplace, as Basgardiyan. The annual lists then follow Arif to Pazar (Atina) from 1891 to 1896, with a rise to Polis Komiseri, then Istanbul from 1897 to 1907. The last posts were in Benghazi (Bingazi) from 1907 to 1909. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 600 in 1891/92, as Polis Komiseri in Pazar, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
