Life#
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
İsmail Hakkı began work in Yenisehir in 1883/84, at about 16, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places İsmail Hakkı in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow İsmail Hakkı to Malkara, Istanbul and Çengelköy from 1891 to 1896. The last posts were in Mabeyni humayun from 1896 to 1905.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 1,100 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mabeyni humayun, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
