Life#
Born in Muğla in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Necip Niyazi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Postnis". Necip Niyazi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1881/82, Necip Niyazi began work in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Mentese, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Necip Niyazi in Istanbul in the council clerkship (Meclis Kitabeti). The annual lists then follow Necip Niyazi to Izmir (İzmir) and Aydın from 1891 to 1895, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1891/92 and to central office official (Merkez Memuru) in 1892/93. From 1895 to 1912 every annual entry places Necip Niyazi again in Istanbul, first as an examining clerk (Mümeyyiz), from 1911/12 in the Mesalihi Kalemi.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 1,500 in 1909/10, the peak, as Mümeyyiz in Istanbul, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1911/12.
