Life#
Born in Muğla in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was the child of a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). At about 13, in 1882/83, Mehmet Şükrü began work in Kula, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mehmet Şükrü in Heraklion (Kandiye) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Şükrü then moved to Muş from 1898 to 1906. The last post was in Durak in 1906/07.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Durak, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Manisa doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by NİZAM BERKAN MERCAN (2025) probably refers to Mehmet Şükrü, since the name and the archive register and page agree, though the birthplace differs.
