Life#
Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). İsmail Hakkı had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1890/91, İsmail Hakkı began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places İsmail Hakkı in Malazgirt as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Muş from 1898 to 1906.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Muş, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
