Ali Haydar Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1864/65 (AH 1281). On record 1879 to 1882, 3 annual entries.

Life

Ali Haydar Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Haydar also wrote Turkish, spoke Bulgarian and had some knowledge of French.

Ali Haydar began work in Bitola in 1877/78, at about 13, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. Every annual entry from 1879/80 to 1881/82 places Ali Haydar in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Elbasan (İlbasan).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1879/80, as Muhabere Memuru in Elbasan, when 16 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 10,800 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1881/82.

Places in order of time

Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
