Life#
Hıristo Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father's occupation was "Terzi". Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi). Hıristo knew four languages, French and Italian in writing and Bulgarian and Turkish in speech, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1882/83, at about 16, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Hıristo in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Next came Shkodër (İşkodra) from 1883 to 1888, then a return to Thessaloniki from 1888 to 1902. The last posts were in Vlorë (Avlonya) from 1902 to 1905. A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 540 in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Vlorë, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
