Life#
Zeynelabidin Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1882/83, Zeynelabidin began work in Bitola, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Zeynelabidin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Korçë (Görice), where the entries run to 1893/94, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1893/94. The last posts were in Basta from 1894 to 1897.
Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Basta, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years the salaries add up to 45,600 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned.
