Life#
Hafız İsmail Edendi was born in Gelibolu in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Evreşe in 1893/94, at about 24, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places İsmail in Evreşe as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru). The annual lists then follow İsmail to Komotini (Gümülcine) and Kavala from 1895 to 1900, then back to Gelibolu, the birthplace, from 1900 to 1903. The last posts were in Kochisar from 1903 to 1906, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 300 in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Kavala, when one in five paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 32,400 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
