Life#
Mehmet Kamil Efendi was born in Gelibolu in 1866/67 (AH 1283), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 29, in 1895/96, Mehmet Kamil began work in Gelibolu, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 29 or older. Both annual entries, for 1900/01 and 1901/02, place Mehmet Kamil in Gelibolu, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 380 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Gelibolu, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Gelibolu doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by OSMAN UMUT NAL (2026) probably refers to Mehmet Kamil, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and page and a place of service agree.
