Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Kemal Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Ali Kemal had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 26, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with Ali Kemal as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. The last posts were in Thessaloniki in 1902/03, as a postal official (Posta Memuru) and Istanbul again in 1903/04.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 600 in 1903/04, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when two in three paid officials earned less.
