Life#
Mehmet Ramazan Efendi was born in Kirim in 1853/54 (AH 1270), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 35, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 35 or older. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Mehmet Ramazan in Istanbul as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru). Next came Bilecik in 1891/92, as a postal official (Posta Memuru). From 1892 to 1904 every annual entry places Mehmet Ramazan again in Istanbul.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 500 in 1891/92, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Bilecik, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. Over 15 years the salaries add up to 55,920 kuruş, 62 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
