Life#
Mehmet Mazhar Bey was born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at the Bahriye Mektebi; Mehmet Mazhar also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Few officials studied at Bahriye Mektebi; only 2 of the 5,146 officials with a school did.
Mehmet Mazhar began work in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 25, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Mehmet Mazhar as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1893/94. The lists have no entry for 1894 to 1897. Mehmet Mazhar then moved to Kırklareli from 1897 to 1902, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last post was in Istanbul again in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 900 in 1897/98, as 2. Müdür in Kırklareli, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1902/03, the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
