Life#
Habip Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Habip knew four languages, Arabic, English, French and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Habip began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 34, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 34 or older. From 1889/90 to 1897/98 every annual entry places Habip in Istanbul, first as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), from 1892/93 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 170 in 1897/98, in the Pul Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
