Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1844/45 (AH 1260), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1860/61, Ali Rıza began work in Izmir (İzmir), paid from the start, on 330 kuruş a month. From 1873/74 to 1903/04 every annual entry places Ali Rıza in Izmir, first as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), from 1876/77 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), from 1889/90 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti) and from 1903/04 as Pul Basmemuru. Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, 11 per cent stayed in one place throughout.
The salary went from 330 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 550 in 1895/96, the peak, in the Pul Kitabeti in Izmir, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 495 kuruş. In all, 32 years of salary come to 157,860 kuruş, 80 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
