Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1841/42 (AH 1257), Mustafa Zihni Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). At about 23, in 1864/65, Mustafa Zihni began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 320 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1866/67, places Mustafa Zihni in Istanbul as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1869/70. Next came Kayseri and Tokat from 1870 to 1873, then a return to Nevşehir, the birthplace, from 1873 to 1880. Mustafa Zihni then moved to Homs in 1883/84, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then Jaffa (Yafa) from 1884 to 1889. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Zihni to Kırşehir from 1889 to 1903. The last posts were in Ağva from 1903 to 1905. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 40 years or more. Six provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 320 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 990 in 1874/75, as 2. Müdür in Nevşehir, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
