Life#
Mustafa Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa began work in Izmir (İzmir) in 1861/62, at about 17, paid from the start, on 330 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1873/74 to 1892/93 places Mustafa in Izmir, first as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), from 1879/80 in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası), from 1885/86 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) and from 1889/90 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru).
The salary went from 330 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 400 in 1889/90, the peak, as Mersule Memuru in Izmir, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less.
