Life#
Born in Berkovitsa (Berkofça) in 1846/47 (AH 1263), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Hüseyin Hüsnü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1867/68, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Niš (Niş), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Prizren as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1873/74. Hüseyin Hüsnü then moved to Novi Pazar in 1874/75, then Skopje (Üsküp) from 1875 to 1879, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). From 1879 to 1907 every annual entry places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Kriva Palanka (Eğri Palanka), first as Seyyar Memur, from 1895/96 as an official (Memur). Entries spanning 39 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 600 in 1875/76, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Skopje, when 54 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 38 years the salaries add up to 250,320 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
