Life#
Born in Erzincan in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Tevfik Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 22, in 1863/64, Ahmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 600 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Ahmet Tevfik as Tatar in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1877/78. Ahmet Tevfik then moved to Kayseri in 1878, then back to Istanbul from 1878 to 1880. Next came a return to Kayseri from 1880 to 1883, then Konya from 1883 to 1895. The last posts were in Edirne from 1895 to 1904. Entries spanning 42 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 700 in 1902/03, the peak, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Edirne, when three in four paid officials earned less. In all, 42 years of salary come to 305,700 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04. Ahmet Tevfik probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına Göre Erzincanlı memurlar" by ENGİN ADAK (2008) (the name and the birthplace agree).
