Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Hüseyin Hüsnü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 28, in 1872/73, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Hüseyin Hüsnü as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Next came Kandilli and Beyoğlu from 1876 to 1879. For 1879 to 1886 the lists have no entry. From 1886 to 1902 every annual entry places Hüseyin Hüsnü again in Istanbul, with a rise to Kutuphaneci.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 640 in 1901/02, as Kutuphaneci in Istanbul, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 127,920 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
