Life#
Born in Ankara in 1847/48 (AH 1264), Andon Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Andon began work in the postal service (Posta) in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Andon as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1876/77. Andon then moved to Sehir posta(galata) from 1877 to 1880, then Galata from 1880 to 1900, with a rise to director (Müdür) in 1895/96. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1900 to 1909, first as Surayi Devlet Azasi, from 1901/02 as Istinaf Mahkemesi Azasi and from 1903/04 as Temyiz Mahkemesi Azasi. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 41 years or more.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 4,000 in 1908/09, as Temyiz Mahkemesi Azasi in Istanbul, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 41 years of salary come to 777,000 kuruş, 3.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. Andon received a rank (rütbe), the Mecidi and Osmani orders and two medals ("Gumus Liyakat Madalyasi").
