Life#
Hamparsom Akna Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Hamparsom Akna also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 16, in 1863/64, Hamparsom Akna began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1868/69 to 1898/99 places Hamparsom Akna in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beyoğlu. A career like this is rare; 13 of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 500 in 1876/77, the peak, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 32 years of salary come to 162,000 kuruş, 80 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1898/99; the list of 1899/1900 (AH 1317) gives the status word Vefat (death).
