Life#
Rodrigez Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1845 (AH 1261) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). In all Rodrigez knew five languages, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing and Arabic and Turkish in speech; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 18, in 1863/64, Rodrigez began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 576 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Rodrigez in Jaffa (Yafa) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Next came Gaza (Gazze) from 1866 to 1871, then Beirut (Beyrut) from 1871 to 1880. Rodrigez then moved to Latakia (Lazkiye) from 1880 to 1887, then Beirut from 1887 to 1889. From 1889 to 1899 the annual entries place Rodrigez again in Jaffa. A career like this is rare; fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 576 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to a peak of 720 in 1866/67, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Gaza, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. Over 36 years pay ended below where it began, 400 kuruş against 576. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
