Life#
Hasan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1845 (AH 1261) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Hasan began work in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 24, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 330 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Hasan in Izmir (İzmir) as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). From 1877 to 1896 every annual entry places Hasan in Bursa, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 330 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 500 in 1880/81, as Posta Memuru in Bursa, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 118,920 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1895/96, the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
