Life#
Yorgi Servet Efendi was born in Kayseri in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Yorgi Servet also attended the telegraph school, and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Yorgi Servet as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Izmir (İzmir), where the entries run to 1879/80. From 1880 to 1897 every annual entry places Yorgi Servet in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 800 in 1880/81, as 2. Müdür in Doğubayazıt, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Kayseri doğumlu Gayrimüslim Osmanlı devlet adamları ..." by YAĞMUR ŞAHİN (2017) probably refers to Yorgi Servet, since the name and the birthplace agree.
