Life#
Hafız Süleyman Efendi was born in Devrek in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Süleyman also attended the telegraph school.
At about 22, in 1873/74, Süleyman began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places Süleyman in Istanbul as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Erzurum, Erzincan, Bitlis and Gevaş, four places in four years, then Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) from 1884 to 1892. The last post was in Karcikan in 1892/93.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 400 in 1892/93, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Karcikan, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 60,720 kuruş, 71 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1892/93.
