Life#
Osman Ferit Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Osman Ferit in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi) in Erzurum, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1879/80, with a rise to Bidayet Mahkemesi Baskitabeti in 1879/80. Osman Ferit then moved to Bayburt from 1880 to 1887. The last posts were in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) from 1887 to 1890.
Pay rose from 750 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 1,600 in 1879/80, as Bidayet Mahkemesi Baskitabeti in Erzurum, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less.
