Life#
Aristidi Efendi was born in Gelibolu in 1845/46 (AH 1262), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Aristidi also wrote French and Greek (Rum) and spoke Turkish.
Aristidi began work in Gelibolu in 1869/70, at about 23, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Aristidi in Bitola (Manastır) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1879/80. Aristidi then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Kavala from 1880 to 1884, then back to Bitola from 1884 to 1892. The last posts were in Mount Athos (Aynaroz) and Edirne from 1892 to 1895 and Xanthi (İskeçe) from 1895 to 1897.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 600 in 1882/83, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Kavala, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 176,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1896/97. Aristidi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Gelibolu doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by OSMAN UMUT NAL (2026) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
