Life#
Ahmet Vasfi Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a religious scholar (ulema). Work began in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Aydın in 1857/58, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice). The first annual entry, for 1878, places Ahmet Vasfi in Baghdad (Bağdat) as Deferi Hakan Muavini. Next came Amarah (Amare) from 1878 to 1880, then a return to Baghdad from 1881 to 1889. The last posts were in Van from 1889 to 1893 and Bitlis from 1893 to 1895, with a rise to Istinaf Mahkemesi Muddei Umumi in 1889/90. The lists give Lağv (abolition of the post) for 1880/81 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 2,000 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 3,000 in 1889/90, as Istinaf Mahkemesi Muddei Umumi in Van, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 17 years of salary come to 472,800 kuruş, 4.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. On average the pay stood in the top 5.4 per cent of each year's paid officials; only 29 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
