Life#
Born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Salih Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Mehmet Salih had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
Work began in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1876/77, at about 19, paid from the start, on 75 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mehmet Salih in Baghdad as Temyiz Mahkemesi Memuru, where the entries run to 1889/90, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1878. Mehmet Salih then moved to Kaza bagdat from 1890 to 1893, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1890/91. From 1893 to 1905 every annual entry places Mehmet Salih again in Baghdad.
Pay rose from 75 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 600 in 1890/91, as 3. Müdür in Kaza bagdat, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 161,820 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
